More News
From N-wiki
You can do regular things with RSS sich as getting the latest news. Newsplorer provides a number of RSS resources out of the box. But you can do a lot more.
del.icio.us Integration
You must have heard it. http://del.icio.us is a popular online bookmarling service that provides an easy way to keep your bookmarks online. Newsplorer integrates with delicious quite naturally: you can bookmark any headline by just right-clicking it then post it into your del.icio.us account. If you don't have an account you can easily create one here: http://del.icio.us/register then start bookmarking some news! Confusing? Bloglines Integration
If you have a Bloglines.com account, follow these steps to integrate it with Newsplorer (thanks Ethan for the question posted on the forum):
- Go to Configure->News Feeds then press the "+" button to add a news feed (you can create a new category for this feed as well, it's your choice).
- Set the channel name to "My Bloglines" and paste the following link under "Channel URL": http://rpc.bloglines.com/getitems?s=0&n=0
- Mark this feed as authenticated and put your bloglines email/password in the authentication section
Now you're ready to receive your Blogline headlines in Newsplorer. Newsplorer hasn't been designed with this integration in mind, so there are some caveats:
- since you have multiple cahnnels you subscribe to, all of them will be fetched as a single channel in Newsplorer. This means that the headlines from different sources will flow as if they were originating from a single source.
- Item descriptions are HTML formatted by the Bloglines API (there's no mention of a plain formatting in their documentation) and Newsplorer can't parse HTML yet (soon to come).
- Channel image as displayed in the tray popup is the image from the first channel in your subscription list. This is again because Newsplorer was not designes to handle specifically Bloglines subscription lists...
Next Newsplorer version will deal with these inconsistencies.
Important: all news items will still be marked as unread in your Bloglines account. To mark all of them as read once they are fetched through Newsplorer, change the Channel URL to this (note the suffix n=1 instead of n=0): http://rpc.bloglines.com/getitems?s=0&n=1

Gmail Integration
For those of you having a gmail account (http://www.gmail.com), here's a simple way to get notified when you have new emails through Newsplorer:
- Go to Configure->News Items and add a new channel called Gmail
- Set the Channel URL to : https://gmail.google.com/gmail/feed/atom
- Mark this feed as authenticated and add your username/password details.
Once new email arrives into your inbox, Newsplorer will display the event as a new headline whose title is the email subject.
Important: If you don't read the email through your gmail account (thus marking it as read) Newsplorer will "see" the headline as already read after the periodic refresh because it treats it as a regular news item. We'll deal with this inconsistency the future Newsplorer version of course.
